The FAIR Institute’s Upper Midwest chapter officially relaunched with a virtual meeting this week, under the leadership of two longtime Institute members, Quinn Judge (U.S. Bank) and Kevin Gust (Netflix). FAIR Institute Membership Director Luke Bader sat down with the chapter co-chairs for a look at where the new chapter is headed.

Kevin and Quinn emphasized that the new chapter will be very much a community of FAIR practice. “Knowing there are other people in the area with similar interests who can share stories and experience—that’s incredibly valuable,” Kevin said. Quinn added “Let’s get our hands dirty with the concepts. FAIR might seem complex, but we can start somewhere and build as we go.”

The chapter will also tackle the big risk-management issue of the day: AI. “If you get past the initial shock, the potential business impact remains the same to some extent—it’s often just a new way of it playing out,” Kevin said. “There’s a tendency either to over-control or to put your head in the sand,” Quinn said. “Neither of those are optimal.”

As Quinn said, the focus for risk management – and for the new FAIR chapter – remains the same. “What we’re really trying to do is enable better decision-making and break down the language barrier between the technical side and the business side.”
