Celebrating 25 Years of FAIR: A Community Built on Learning, Sharing, and Advancing Cyber Risk
Every advancement in the FAIR community begins with people who are willing to learn, share their experiences, and help others make better decisions about cyber risk.
As we celebrate 25 years of the inception of the FAIR Model, we want to take a moment to thank every FAIR Institute member, chapter leader, instructor, volunteer, contributor, and practitioner who has helped shape this incredible community. Your willingness to share your knowledge, mentor others, challenge assumptions, and continually refine the practice of cyber risk quantification is what makes the FAIR Institute more than a professional organization—it makes us a global community.
The FAIR story began in Columbus, Ohio, in 2001.
While serving as CISO at Nationwide Insurance, Jack Jones experienced a challenge familiar to many security leaders: communicating cyber risk to executive leadership and the board in a way that enabled confident business decisions. That experience led to the creation of the FAIR Model—a practical methodology for understanding, measuring, and communicating cyber risk in financial terms.
Twenty-five years later, that mission remains just as relevant.
Today, organizations around the world are facing new technologies, new threats, and new business opportunities driven by artificial intelligence. Yet the need to communicate cyber risk in language the business understands has never been greater. FAIR continues to help CISOs, security teams, executives, boards, and business leaders make more informed, data-driven decisions.
One of the greatest strengths of the FAIR Institute has always been our global chapter community.
Our chapters bring practitioners together to exchange ideas, discuss real-world challenges, and learn from one another. They embody the collaborative spirit that has helped FAIR grow from an idea born in Columbus into a worldwide movement.
To honor that legacy, one of our longest-standing and most active chapters—the Ohio FAIR Chapter—is opening a special virtual meeting to the entire FAIR community worldwide.
