As we look forward to the 2024 FAIR Conference (FAIRCON24), October 1-2 in Washington, DC, (register now!) let’s recall some of the great moments from FAIRCONs past.
The conference, now going on year eight, has always been at the leading edge of the risk management profession, both as a venue to share the latest thinking and techniques, as well as connect with the leading practitioners and thinkers – who have always been generous in sharing their expertise with beginners in Factor Analysis of Information Risk (FAIR™) the standard for quantitative analysis of cyber and operational risk.
Here’s a sampling of key presentations over the years (and there were many more):
1. FAIRCON21: Jack Jones Introduces FAIR-CAM
A major moment in FAIR history: FAIR creator Jack Jones (image above) presented the FAIR Controls Analytics Model, the breakthrough methodology that is conquering one of last refuges for subjective risk assessments. “Now, we can begin to understand where controls fit into the loss event chain…and we can apply the conditions of those controls more effectively in our analysis,” Jack said.
2. FAIRCON23: Jack Jones on the Future of Cyber Risk Management in an AI World
Jack’s keynotes addresses are always on top of the latest challenges in cyber risk management. HIs message in 2023 was
to take full advantage of artificial intelligence and risk analysis automation, “we have to really think more deeply about our problem space, and not assume we know what we are talking about at a more scientific and fundamental level.”
3. FAIRCON23 Panel on the New SEC Cyber Rule
The Securities and Exchange Commission’s requirements for disclosure of material cyber risk set off a rush among public companies toward cyber risk quantification. This session, moderated by the Wall Street Journal’s Kim Nash and featuring David Hirsch, Chief of the SEC’s cyber enforcement unit, gave some much-needed authoritative advice.
4. FAIRCON20: Netflix's FAIR Risk Management Program
Pillars of the FAIR community, Tony Martin-Vegue and colleagues at Netflix, have given several FAIRCON sessions, all filled with the kind of hand-on advice on running quantitative risk management programs that conference attendees have come to expect from the event.
5. FAIRCON19 James Lam and Chris Inglis on Perfecting Board Presentations
One of the most entertaining and informative sessions from any FAIR Conference: Corporate governance expert James Lam and former National Cyber Director Chris Inglis staged a mock board presentation by a CISO.
